First, it is easer if you write the left hand side as:
(n-1)(n-1) +n2 + (n+1)(n+1)
Then expand the two sets of brackets using FOIL and you will get:
n2 -2 n + 1 + n2 + n2 +2n + 1
Then add the like terms and you will get:
3n2+2
